Harp Grove

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal visitor attraction, Harp Grove sits just outside Ross-on-Wye and rewards a bit of exploration with quiet paths through mixed deciduous trees. The forest floor is thick with undergrowth, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit for.

This isn't somewhere to rush. The paths meander naturally rather than follow marked trails, so you can lose a solid hour or two if you're not careful - which is rather the point. Dog walkers seem to love it, and it's the sort of place where kids will either have the time of their lives building dens and climbing on fallen logs, or get bored after thirty minutes depending on their age and how much patience you've got.

It's free to access, though facilities are minimal to non-existent, so bring water and don't expect anywhere to eat. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are worth packing. Best visited autumn through early summer - winter's a bit bleak and August can be thick with midges.

It's the kind of place that fits into a wider Herefordshire ramble rather than being a destination in itself, but that's rather its charm.
