Ross-on-Wye

Perched above a great loop of the River Wye, this market town has been drawing visitors since Victorian times - though these days it's more about canoe hire than taking the waters. The high street slopes gently down towards the river, lined with independent shops that actually seem to thrive rather than struggle. Thursdays and Saturdays bring proper market bustle to the central square.

From the Wilton Roundabout, you get your first glimpse of why people rave about the Wye Valley. The river curves through water meadows below, while wooded hills rise on both sides. It's hiking country of the finest sort. May Hill dominates the eastern skyline with its distinctive crown of trees - the National Trust site offers cracking views across three counties once you've made the trek up.

Canoeists launch from the town centre most summer days, drifting downstream through some of England's most unspoilt countryside. Walking the Wye Valley Path takes you past ancient woodlands like Harp Grove and Cornage Wood, where you might spot red kites wheeling overhead. Less energetic souls can potter around Wigpool Nature Reserve or simply enjoy a pint by the river.

The A40 brings you here from Gloucester in about 45 minutes, while trains from Birmingham take just over an hour via Hereford. Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense - you're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a meal, but surrounded by countryside that begs to be explored. Several sites offer glamping options if canvas isn't your thing, while traditional caravan parks like Haywood Farm provide a proper base for longer stays.
