National Trust - May Hill

The walk up May Hill rewards you with one of those views that actually justifies the hype. From the summit near Ross-on-Wye, you can see across three counties on a clear day - the Welsh hills rolling away to the west, the Malverns to the north, and the Forest of Dean spreading below. It's proper walking country, this bit of Herefordshire.

The hill itself is National Trust land, crowned with a clump of Scots pines that look almost deliberately planted for the postcard shot. The ascent takes about 45 minutes from the car park, following marked trails through mixed woodland and open grassland. Nothing technical, but it is a genuine climb - your legs will know you've done it. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are worth packing.

History types will appreciate the Iron Age fort remains visible on the slopes, though there's nothing dramatic to see - mainly just earthworks and a shift in how the ground sits under your feet. For families, older kids will manage the walk fine; younger ones might struggle unless they're already used to hills. The summit's a brilliant spot for a packed lunch, especially on weekends when you'll often have the place to yourself despite being so close to Ross-on-Wye.

Admission is free, which is typical National Trust open access land. Allow a good three hours including the walk and time on top. Several of the nearby parks - Greenacres Glamping and Darnells' Farm are particularly close - put you within easy striking distance for a morning or afternoon hike without needing to drive far.
