Harperley Camp

The Roman fort at Harperley Camp is one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find. It's not a reconstruction or a visitor centre - what you get here is the actual earthwork remains of a second-century military settlement, laid out across moorland just outside Bishop Auckland. The fort's defensive ditches are still visible, running in clear lines across the grass, and you can walk the perimeter to get a proper sense of how the Romans organised their space.

It's worth the detour if you're into Roman Britain or you're the sort who enjoys reading the landscape like an archaeological map. Kids might find it a bit abstract - there's no museum, no finds on display, just the bones of the structure itself. You'll need maybe 30-45 minutes to walk around and take it in, depending on how much time you spend looking at the interpretive panels if they're there.

Historians and walkers will get the most from this one. The moorland setting is rather fine, actually, and it connects well with a broader exploration of the region's Roman heritage. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Bradley Burn is closest at just over a mile away - you could easily walk here on a decent afternoon. The site appears to be free and accessible year-round, though conditions underfoot can be boggy after rain, so choose your footwear carefully.
