Harridge Wood West Nature Reserve

Walk into Harridge Wood West and you're immediately swallowed by ancient woodland - the kind of place where the light filters green through the canopy and everything feels older than you. This nature reserve near Mells is proper quiet, the sort of spot where you actually hear birds instead of just assuming they're there somewhere.

The woodland itself is the attraction. There are paths threading through, though they're not manicured - this feels like actual nature rather than a visitor experience someone's designed for you. Bluebells if you time it right in spring, good fungi displays in autumn, and that earthy smell that does something to your head when you've been inside too long.

It's excellent for walkers who want solitude without needing a three-hour drive. Families with kids over eight will get something out of it, though younger ones might find it a bit "just trees". History types will appreciate the management - it's been allowed to develop naturally, which tells you something about how our ancestors saw woodland before we got precious about everything.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to listen. There's no visitor facility here - no cafe, no information boards, no interpretation. Just wood and paths and the occasional muddy patch. Free access, as reserves tend to be.
