Hatteringill Head

The walk up Hatteringill Head rewards you with views across the Lake District fells and the Solway Firth - proper expansive stuff. It's not a major fell by any means, but from Cockermouth it's manageable for a half-day outing and beats fighting crowds on the bigger peaks.

You'll be looking at moorland terrain with decent vistas once you're up there. The climb is steady rather than brutal, and on a clear day you can see across to Scotland. There's no admission charge - it's a proper fell walk, not a visitor attraction with a café. Go when the weather looks stable; the views vanish completely in mist and there's not much else up there to occupy you.
