Slatefell

The walk up Slatefell from Cockermouth way is one of those Lakeland routes that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you properly for the effort. You're looking at a decent fell, not a tourist trap, where the path winds through moorland and the views back towards the town and across to the higher peaks feel genuinely earned.

It's a straightforward climb - nothing technical, but steady enough that you'll know you've done it. The fell itself is relatively modest compared to the big hitters nearby, but that's precisely why it works. Families with older kids will manage it fine in a couple of hours there and back. Walkers wanting to string together a longer day can link it to other routes in the area without faffing about.

The real appeal is the lack of crowds. Come midweek and you might have the fell almost to yourself, which feels increasingly rare in the Lakes. The moorland character means it's open and exposed - not for misty days unless you know what you're doing - but clear weather gives you proper distance in your views.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Castle Guards Farm Retreat or Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite are closest - it makes for a sensible half-day outing that doesn't require the infrastructure of the bigger Lakeland circuits. Free to access, obviously. Allow two to three hours depending on pace and how long you want to sit at the top.
