Jenkin Gill Plantation

The trees here are tall enough that you lose the sky in summer. Jenkin Gill Plantation, just outside Cockermouth, is a proper forest walk rather than a manicured tourist destination - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of a gift shop till ringing.

It's woodland through and through. You're walking beneath conifers and broadleaves on paths that meander without much fanfare. No marked trails that I could find, no interpretive signs telling you what you're looking at. Just forest. That means it rewards people who like a bit of quiet exploration - walkers after a genuine break from the world rather than families after a two-hour activity.

The nearest campsite is Whinfell Hall Farm, barely a mile away, which makes this a dead easy morning stroll from a tent or caravan. If you're based at one of the other parks round Cockermouth way - Skiddaw View or Forest Views further out - it's a short drive and works well alongside a proper walk in the Lake District proper.

Go when it's not raining if you can manage it, because the paths get genuinely muddy and there's nowhere to dry off. Allow an hour if you're pottering about; longer if you actually want to sit down and exist in a forest for a bit. It's free and unstaffed, which means low expectations but also zero hassle. Not Instagram-friendly. Absolutely worth it if you're the type who actually likes trees.
