Haughley Green Air Raid Shelter

The air raid shelter at Haughley Green is essentially a brick-built underground bunker from World War Two, preserved more or less as it was left. You descend into a cramped, damp space that genuinely feels like stepping back seventy-plus years - the original benches are still there, along with ventilation pipes and the sort of austere fixtures you'd expect from wartime engineering. It's not flashy. There's no interpretation board or gift shop. Just the shelter itself, open to the elements and to visitors at all hours.

History buffs will find it fascinating, particularly anyone interested in the Home Front or how rural Suffolk coped during the Blitz. The walk down and the confined space do give you a proper sense of what those alerts must have meant - the scramble, the darkness, the waiting. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, though it won't hold younger children's attention for long, and it's not exactly cheerful.

Being free and accessible round the clock means you can call in whenever suits your schedule, though daylight obviously helps. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes for a proper look. It's close enough to Diss to tack onto a wider exploration of the area, and if you're based at Bright Meadow Caravan Park a few miles away, this makes a reasonable morning or afternoon diversion. Just don't expect museum facilities or crowds - it's genuinely just the thing itself.
