Hayling Wood

Walk into Hayling Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth forest - the kind where light filters through in soft columns and the floor is thick with leaf litter. It's a straightforward woodland walk near Petersfield, nothing fancy, but genuinely peaceful if you catch it on a quiet day.

What you get here is space to breathe. There are paths threading through the trees, good for a solid hour's ramble if you're not rushing, longer if you potter about looking at fungi or bird life. Walkers will find it worthwhile - the terrain is gentle enough that it's not a slog, but varied enough to keep your legs engaged. Families with younger kids might find an hour sufficient before the novelty wears thin; older children who actually like being outdoors will happily spend longer.

The wood works well as part of a wider exploration of the area. If you're camping at Cedar Valley or Woodlands Camping, both within a couple of miles, Hayling Wood is the sort of place you'd pop into for a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself - you won't travel hours to see it - but as a local green space that actually delivers on quiet woodland, it's solid.

Bring a decent pair of boots when it's been wet; the paths can get boggy. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so go prepared. Best visited outside school holidays if you want genuine solitude.
