Hazelwalls Community Park

The reserve sits just outside Uttoxeter, a proper working landscape where you'll find woodland, grassland, and wetland all doing their thing without fuss. It's the kind of place where you can actually spot something - treecreepers, newts, the odd fox if you're lucky and quiet enough. The trails wind through without much fanfare, which means you won't find crowds or over-engineered viewing platforms. That's either brilliant or boring depending on what you want.

Walkers will get the most from Hazelwalls. There's genuine habitat here rather than manicured garden paths, so expect muddy boots and actual birds rather than descriptions of birds on a board. An hour is realistic if you're ambling; two hours if you're doing the full circuit and stopping to look at things properly. Families with restless younger kids might find it a bit thin on attractions - there's no playground, no café, no gift shop. Teenagers who actually enjoy nature, though, or anyone with binoculars and a field guide will do fine.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Lane Tree Hideaways is closest at just over two miles - and you can use Hazelwalls as your morning walk before heading into Uttoxeter proper or exploring the broader Staffordshire countryside. The reserve itself appears to be free and open access, though you'll want to check locally before turning up. Go early if the weather's reasonable. Midday brings dog walkers, which can spook anything worth watching.
