Hellpot Wood

Head into Hellpot Wood from Grange-over-Sands and you'll find yourself in proper woodland, the sort where the canopy does its job and blocks out most of the sky. It's a straightforward forest walk rather than a tourist attraction with facilities or interpretation boards, so go in knowing what you're after.

The woodland itself is decent enough. Ancient oaks, a bit of understorey, paths that are manageable if slightly muddy depending on the season. The name alone draws people in - Hellpot Wood sounds like something out of a Gothic novel, though quite what earned it that name is lost to history. Either way, it's the sort of place that appeals to walkers more than families with young kids looking for a quick outing. You'll get a solid hour's wandering out of it if you're not rushing.

Walkers will appreciate its proximity to Grange-over-Sands, making it easy to combine with other bits of countryside in the area. If you're staying at Old Park Wood Caravan Holiday Park four miles away, it's a legitimate alternative to a longer drive elsewhere, though it won't compare to the bigger draws like Arnside Knott just down the coast.

Free to access, no facilities that I'm aware of. Go early or late to avoid what few crowds there are. It's the sort of walk that works best if you're the type who actually enjoys being under trees rather than ticking off viewpoints.
