Hempstead Wood

Walking into Hempstead Wood near Heathfield feels like stepping back into proper Sussex woodland - the kind that's been here for centuries and hasn't been fussed about too much. Ancient oak and beech dominate the canopy, with a floor of ferns and moss that stays damp even in summer. The paths are well-trodden but never crowded, which is the real draw here.

It's excellent for family walks - long enough to feel like a proper outing without wearing down younger legs, and interesting enough that you won't hear complaints about boredom. The woodland changes character depending which way you wander, from open glades to dense stretches where light filters through in shafts. Bird spotters will find it rewarding; I've seen nuthatches and woodpeckers without even trying particularly hard.

Allow a couple of hours minimum to do the wood justice, though you can dip in for a quick 45-minute leg-stretch if time's tight. There's no formal entrance fee or visitor centre - it's just woodland you can access freely. Autumn's when it really sings, but spring bluebells are reason enough to return.

It won't blow your mind, but it's genuine, unreconstructed Sussex woodland worth experiencing beyond the more manicured parks in the area.
