Selwyns Wood Nature Reserve - Sussex Wildlife Trust

A proper woodland walk through Sussex countryside, Selwyns Wood is one of those reserves where you actually feel like you've stepped away from it all rather than just ticking a box. The Sussex Wildlife Trust manages it well - mature trees, open glades, and enough space that you won't be fighting through crowds even on a decent weekend. It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely thrive. The paths wind through mixed woodland with plenty to spot if you're into birds or smaller wildlife, though I'd manage expectations if you're hoping for dramatic vistas. More intimate than showy.

It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Dernwood Farm or Horam Manor are both within striking distance - as a morning or late-afternoon stroll without needing to drive far. You're looking at maybe an hour for a leisurely circuit, though you can easily extend it depending on which routes you fancy. Free to access, which is always a bonus.

Heathfield is the nearest proper town if you need supplies, though honestly the reserve itself is the draw here rather than being part of some bigger attraction cluster. Best visited during spring when the woodland floor comes alive, though even in winter it's satisfying if the ground isn't waterlogged. If your kids are the type to enjoy spotting trees and listening for woodpeckers rather than needing a visitor centre with a shop, they'll find it engaging. Otherwise it's more for grown-ups who appreciate a straightforward woodland ramble.
