Henley Hill

The climb up this modest Somerset peak won't leave you gasping, but the views across the Mendip Hills and towards Glastonbury Tor make it a proper little outing from Wells. At just over 200 metres, Henley Hill offers one of those satisfying short walks where the effort-to-reward ratio feels spot on.

Families with older children will find the gentle ascent manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain near the top. The path can get muddy after rain - typical Somerset clay that clings to your boots like nobody's business. On clear days, you can pick out the cathedral spires of Wells below and the distinctive outline of Glastonbury Tor in the distance.

Allow about an hour for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the summit. Early morning walkers often have the hill to themselves, with mist rolling across the valleys below creating some lovely atmospheric moments. Dog walkers frequent the lower slopes, so keep leads handy if your pooch is the sociable type.
