The folks at Hercules have been brewing lager in Lisburn since 1983, and their operation sits just south of Belfast - close enough for a half-day visit, far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. It's a working brewery, so you get the real thing: the smell of hops, the clank of machinery, and staff who actually know what they're talking about rather than actors playing brewery workers.

The tour takes you through the production floor where you can see how Yardsman Lager gets made, from grain to bottle. It's not the most theatrical brewery experience - there's no dry ice or mood lighting - but that's precisely the appeal if you're after something genuine. You'll learn what goes into a proper lager, taste the difference between batches, and probably leave with a better understanding of why some lagers are forgettable and theirs aren't.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park or The Pods at Streamvale nearby - both within twenty minutes. Families with teenagers who actually care about how things work will get more out of it than young kids, and it's absolutely worth an hour of your time if you're into food and drink tourism. The brewery tap is decent too, though don't expect gastropub fare.
