Sign 21 on Cannock Chase's Heritage Trail marks a spot where industrial history collides with woodland walking. This isn't a grand museum building - it's a waymarker on the ground, part of a self-guided route that threads through what was once one of England's most productive coal and iron mining areas. The sign itself points out what's around you: old pit workings, restored landscapes, evidence of the graft that built the local economy. You'll need proper walking boots and an ordnance survey map or the trail guide to make sense of it all. Most people give it twenty minutes or so, stopping to read the information board and look at the terrain, then carry on walking.

Rugeley is the nearest town, about four miles away, and several camping spots lie close by - Chase Camping at Four Oaks Farm and Silver Trees Holiday Park are less than two miles off. The trail works brilliantly as part of a longer Cannock Chase walking day if you're based at one of the local caravan sites. Come in autumn when the woodland colours are decent and the crowds thinner. Free to access, naturally, since it's just a trail marker in open country.
