The John Muir Way (West End)

The John Muir Way starts at Helensburgh on the Clyde coast and stretches 44 miles inland through Argyll - properly ambitious stuff. The West End section from Craigendoran is the gateway, where coastal paths give way to forest and glen as you head towards Loch Lomond. Most people don't attempt the full distance, and that's fine. The real appeal is flexibility: tackle a section in an afternoon, or plot a multi-day route if you're properly keen.

This is serious walking country, not a gentle stroll. The terrain varies between coastal tracks, woodland trails, and hillside scrambles. You'll pass through villages like Arrochar and Tarbet, where you can resupply and rest up. On a clear day the views across the lochs and mountains justify the effort, though Scottish weather means you'll often be squinting through mist instead.

Walkers with decent stamina will get the most from it. Families with young legs can manage shorter sections - the Craigendoran to Helensburgh stretch is relatively easy and takes about three hours. History buffs might appreciate the heritage markers dotted along the route, though the main draw is landscape, not interpretation boards.

The path is free and unmarked in places, so carry a map or download the official route app before you set off. Allow a full day for 12-15 miles, longer if you're not a regular walker. Rosneath Castle Caravan Park sits nearby, making it a logical base for exploring the route in stages rather than one punishing march.
