Hill Farm

The moment you arrive at Hill Farm, you're standing in proper countryside - rolling grassland and hedgerows that feel a world away from the A14. This nature reserve near Huntingdon is one of those places where you can actually hear yourself think, which says something about how peaceful it is.

It's a working landscape, really. You'll find traditional hay meadows, woodland edges, and the kind of open ground where birds actually have space to move around. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting things - skylarks are regular here, and it's decent for kestrels too. For walkers, the paths are straightforward enough, though underfoot can be muddy after rain so proper boots aren't a bad shout.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet - there's no interpretation centre or playground, so it works best if you're after a solid couple of hours of fresh air rather than an afternoon's entertainment. Serious birdwatchers and naturalists will get far more from it, especially during spring and autumn migration periods.

The real win is how close it sits to Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - less than a mile away - so it slots nicely into a week exploring the Huntingdonshire parks and reserves. Free access, as far as I can tell, and you're looking at two hours if you're taking your time. Go early morning if you want the best chance of wildlife spotting.
