Hillocks Wood

Dense woodland just a few miles south of Swindon, Hillocks Wood is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's a proper forest - not a manicured nature reserve, but genuine mixed woodland with paths threading through beech, oak and ash. You won't find a visitor centre or marked trails here, which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on your mood.

Walkers get the most from it. There's real terrain - roots, slopes, the occasional boggy patch - so it's not a stroll along a gravel track. The canopy is thick enough to feel genuinely lost in, even though Swindon hums away nearby. Bring decent boots and an OS map if you're doing anything longer than a quick loop. Thirty minutes will get you a feel for the place; two hours if you want to wander properly.

Families with older kids who actually like forests rather than playgrounds will do well here. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. There's nowhere to buy a coffee or an ice cream, so come prepared.

It pairs nicely with Park Farm Campsite just down the road - proper country camping rather than a holiday park with bouncy castles. The wood feels wild enough to justify a proper expedition from there, especially on a misty morning when you can pretend Swindon doesn't exist. Free to access, open whenever you fancy showing up. Just respect it - people live nearby.
