Hinninghouse Wood

Deep woods and not much fanfare - that's Hinninghouse Wood near Holmrook. You won't find marked trails or visitor facilities here, just the genuine article: a proper patch of northern forest where you can actually breathe without someone's Instagram caption interrupting. The canopy is dense enough that even on damp Cumbrian days, you stay fairly dry underneath. Birdsong is decent, and if you're lucky with timing you'll spot deer moving through the understory.

This is walker territory, really. Not the Instagram crowd after five minutes of wandering. Bring proper boots - the ground gets boggy in places - and don't expect waymarks or benches. You navigate by feel and by keeping the sound of the valley in your head. It's the kind of place where you remember why you left the Lakeside visitor centres behind.

If you're camping at Fisherground Campsite just down the road, this is ideal for a morning sortie before the day gets warm. Allow ninety minutes to two hours for a proper wander without rushing. There's no admission charge that we can find, and no set hours either - it's just there. Winter's actually better than summer if you can handle the chill, because the deciduous canopy opens up views you miss in full leaf.

It won't hold your attention for a full day, but as a leg-stretcher between bigger walks or a break from campsite routine, it's worth the detour. Real woodland without the gift shop.
