Hoades Wood

Hoades Wood is a proper stretch of ancient woodland just outside Canterbury, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees are thick enough that even on a bright day there's a cool, dappled feeling underfoot, and the paths wind through without any obvious direction - which is either brilliant or slightly unnerving depending on how you feel about getting temporarily lost.

It's miles better than some of the manicured parks you find around here. No signposts every twenty metres, no cafe, no forced routes. Just woodland as it should be. Walkers will find genuine value in the quieter trails, and if you've got kids who don't need constant entertainment, they'll enjoy spotting the undergrowth and clambering over fallen logs. Bring proper shoes though - it gets muddy.

We'd allow at least ninety minutes to properly explore without rushing. Early morning or late afternoon is when it feels least crowded, though honestly it rarely feels rammed. Autumn is particularly good if you time it right, when the light changes how the whole place looks.

If you're staying at Dog & Duck Leisure Park down the road, this works as a genuine alternative to the usual Canterbury tourist trail. It's free, which helps, and it's the sort of place that reminds you why woodland matters. Not a day-tripper attraction - more a proper walk that happens to be on your doorstep.
