Hodgson's Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside York, Hodgson's Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - though it's worth knowing about if you're staying in the area. The trees here are dense enough to feel properly remote despite being barely four miles from the city centre, with footpaths that wind through mixed woodland without the tourist crush of some northern beauty spots.

It's ideal for anyone wanting to stretch their legs without committing to a full day hike. Most people seem to spend an hour or so here, wandering the quieter paths and letting the kids burn energy among the trees.
