Hollowmires Wood

The woodland around Hollowmires feels properly atmospheric - damp earth, towering conifers, and that particular Cumbrian quiet you don't get anywhere else. It's a straightforward forest walk near Cockermouth, nothing flashy, but exactly what you want if you've had enough of curated attractions and tourist queues.

There's a network of paths threading through the trees, and the ground underfoot is soft enough that kids won't complain their legs hurt after twenty minutes. Walkers will find it satisfying rather than challenging - you're looking at an hour or so if you potter about, maybe ninety minutes if you explore properly. The light filters through the canopy in that golden way that makes photographers lose hours, though bring a waterproof layer because it can feel damp even when it hasn't rained.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite down the road. It's close enough for a morning walk without needing to pile everyone in the car, but far enough that it feels like an actual expedition rather than the campsite's back garden. Families with primary-school-aged kids will get decent mileage from it; older teenagers might find it a bit samey unless they're genuinely into woodland ecology.

Go when the light's good - late morning or early afternoon - because the forest floor doesn't get much sun and you'll want to see where you're stepping. It's free, obviously. No facilities, so bring water.
