Hollybed Farm Meadows

The meadows here sit just outside Malvern - proper Worcestershire countryside where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working nature reserve that doesn't make a fuss about itself, which is rather the point. You get open grassland, wildflower patches that come alive in late spring and early summer, and the kind of bird life that makes binoculars worth carrying.

This is genuinely good for walkers and anyone serious about spotting butterflies or dragonflies. Not a theme park experience - there are no facilities to speak of, no visitor centre, just land that's been left to do what it does best. Kids will get something from it if they're the type to hunt for insects or want to run around without bumping into crowds, but don't expect them to be entertained for hours.

The nearest town is Malvern, which sits about three miles away and makes a solid base for a few days exploring the area. If you're staying at one of the caravan sites - The Turbles or Swallowfields are closest at under a mile - you can walk here without needing the car, which is the way to do it.

Timing-wise, visit between April and August when the wildflowers are actually worth photographing and the insects are active. Early morning or late afternoon gets you the best light and you'll likely have the place to yourself. Entry appears to be free, though it's worth checking ahead as access policies for reserves can shift. Allow two hours if you're serious about looking, less if you're just after a leg-stretch.
