Holy Well

The water here is so clear it's almost unsettling - you can see straight down to the sandy bottom even where it drops away sharply. Holy Well, just outside Driffield, is a proper freshwater lake that's been drawing people for centuries, though these days it's blissfully quiet compared to the coast.

It's a small spot, maybe twenty minutes' walk around the perimeter if you're being leisurely, and the main appeal is straightforward: the water itself. On a decent day the reflections are genuinely lovely, and you'll often have the place nearly to yourself. Walkers pass through regularly, locals bring their kids for a splash in summer, and if you're into wildlife the margins are thick with reeds and dragonflies.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities, no charge - which means it feels more like stumbling on a local secret than visiting an official attraction. Bring a picnic if you're planning to linger. The ground can get boggy away from the main path, so proper shoes are sensible rather than trainers.

If you're based at Cowden Holiday Park, it's close enough for an easy morning outing without feeling like a forced detour. Families with young children might find twenty minutes plenty, though older kids keen on wildlife spotting could easily spend longer. It's the kind of place that works best on a calm day when you can actually hear the birds and see your own reflection properly.
