Moor Hill Beacon

Standing atop this ancient earthwork just outside Driffield, you'll find yourself on one of East Yorkshire's most atmospheric Bronze Age sites. The beacon itself is a substantial round barrow - essentially a burial mound - that commands sweeping views across the Yorkshire Wolds and down towards the coast.

What strikes you immediately is the sense of isolation. This isn't some manicured heritage site with visitor centres and interpretive boards. It's raw archaeology in a working landscape, where sheep graze around the edges of what was once someone's final resting place some 4,000 years ago.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the monument's significance, though there's precious little to see beyond the grassy mound itself. The real draw is the location - perched on high ground with panoramic views that explain exactly why our ancestors chose this spot. On clear days, you can make out the North Sea glinting in the distance.

Expect a proper walk to reach it, and don't bother if the weather's grim - there's no shelter whatsoever. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming after the trek up.
