Hope Johnstone Park

The River Annan cuts through Hope Johnstone Park like a ribbon of proper wildness, and this nature reserve near Moffat rewards anyone willing to leave the main road behind. It's the kind of place where you actually spot things - grey wagtails picking along the shallows, roe deer slipping through the trees, the occasional heron standing dead still on a rock. The woodland is mixed enough to feel natural rather than managed, with paths that wander through rather than march across the landscape.

This is prime territory for serious birdwatchers and walkers who want something beyond a two-minute postcard stop. You'll need proper footwear; the ground gets boggy in places and the banks can be steep where the river has carved through. A couple of hours is realistic if you're just doing a loop, though you could easily spend half a day here picking your way along the water. The reserve is free to access, which makes it worth factoring into any week based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Howslack Farm down the road.

The setting matters too - you're in real Dumfries and Galloway country here, nowhere near manicured or crowded. Families with under-eights might find it a bit slow; there's no playground energy. But if your kids are old enough to actually watch for wildlife rather than just wanting to run about, they'll engage properly. Early morning or dusk is when you'll see the most movement, though that takes forward planning from wherever you're staying.
