Planet Sparkle

Planet Sparkle sits just outside Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, and it's one of those attractions that divides opinion rather sharply. It's essentially a collection of crystalline structures and geological displays set up as a kind of outdoor exhibition space - the sort of thing that appeals immediately to younger kids and rock enthusiasts, less so to everyone else.

The main draw is genuinely the crystals themselves. They're properly impressive if you're into that sort of thing - large specimens that catch the light in ways that feel almost theatrical. You can walk around at your own pace, which takes anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to read about the science behind them. It's free to visit, which is the main thing in its favour, and there's no time pressure.

Honestly though, it's more of a quick diversion than a destination unto itself. Most adults will find thirty minutes is enough; young children might stay longer if they're genuinely fascinated by sparkly rocks. The Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site is only two miles away, so if you're based there with a caravan or tent, it's worth a morning visit to break up the day. Same goes for Howslack Farm or Riverside Holiday Park - neither will eat up your holiday time, and you're not missing much if you skip it.

Walk it off afterwards in the surrounding countryside. Moffat itself has proper shops and cafes if you need to regroup.
