Horncroft Warren

The forest floor at Horncroft Warren is thick with moss and leaf litter - proper Sussex woodland in the truest sense. This is a working forest near Pulborough, not some manicured nature reserve, and it shows. You'll find yourself walking under a canopy of ancient trees with the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

It's the sort of place walkers actually enjoy rather than endure. The paths wind through without feeling forced, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting without being exhausting. Families with older kids will do well here - younger ones might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, if I'm honest. History buffs won't find much to grab onto; this is about the landscape itself, not what happened here centuries ago.

Access details are sparse online, which is typical for smaller woodland areas. Worth ringing ahead or checking locally in Pulborough before you go. The forest sits well within reach of the camping sites dotted around the area - Wakestone & Wild Glamping and Woodfire at Westerlands are both within a few miles, making it a solid morning or afternoon walk if you're staying put for a few days.

Allow a couple of hours minimum to do it justice. Go on a weekday if you can. The atmosphere changes completely when you're not sharing the paths with half the county.
