Horse Hole

You'll find this sea cave tucked into the cliffs near Bridlington, accessible only at low tide when the rocks underfoot aren't completely submerged. It's a proper scramble to get there - nothing like a gentle woodland stroll - and once inside, the cave opens up into a modest cavern with water pooling on the floor. The name's something of a mystery: local legend suggests horses were once hidden here, though there's precious little evidence for it. What you actually get is a handful of minutes poking around a damp rocky space with decent views back out towards the coast.

It's free, which helps, and genuinely interesting if you're into coastal geology or local folklore. The walk itself - perhaps fifteen minutes down to the cave mouth from the clifftop car park - matters more than what's inside. Low tide is essential, so check times before you set off; high tide simply erases access. Strong swimmers and rock-scrambling types will get the most from it; small children will likely find it underwhelming and potentially risky on slippery stones.

If you're staying at Haven Thornwick Bay or one of the other caravan parks dotted around the Bridlington area, this makes a decent hour's outing on a fine morning. Pair it with the longer clifftop walks or a visit to Bridlington itself and you've got a proper half-day sorted. On its own, it's bit brief and weather-dependent to justify a special trip, but as part of a wider Yorkshire coast exploration, it's worth the detour.
