Horse Pot

A small, dark loch tucked into the moorland south of Huntly, Horse Pot is the kind of water you stumble across rather than plan a trip around. The name's a bit of a mystery - locals have their theories, none particularly conclusive - but it's a proper wild spot, surrounded by rough grassland and thin birch woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from the town.

The loch itself is shallow and peaty, the water nearly black in certain light, which gives it an atmospheric quality that photographs struggle to capture. There's no visitor infrastructure here: no paths, no benches, no visitor centre. You park up and walk in, which means you'll have the place to yourself on most days. It's ideal for folk who like their nature unmanicured and aren't fussed about views that Instagram would recognise.

Historically minded visitors might find the area interesting - the moorland around Huntly has centuries of human activity layered into it - but don't come expecting interpretation boards or facilities. This works best as a short detour if you're exploring the wider Aberdeenshire countryside, perhaps combining it with a stay at Huntly Castle Holiday Park, which sits just half a mile away and offers considerably more comfort than sleeping rough by the loch.

Allow 30 minutes to an hour maximum unless you're particularly keen on sitting quietly and watching the light change. It's the kind of place that rewards solitude rather than lingering crowds.
