Horseshoe Wood

The walk through Horseshoe Wood is one of those proper Cumbrian experiences that doesn't shout about itself. Just outside Cockermouth, this forest offers a genuine escape into dense woodland with footpaths that wind through mature trees and over occasionally boggy ground. You're looking at a good hour or so for a decent circuit, depending on which trails you fancy.

It's the sort of place where walkers with mid-level fitness will feel properly rewarded. The paths are generally well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. What appeals here is the quiet - no car parks packed with tourists, no visitor centre, just trees and the occasional sound of the river. Families with children of walking age will manage fine, though younger kids might find a full lap a bit much.

Come in spring when the woodland floor's alive with bluebells, or autumn when the light filters through in that golden way that makes you forget about your phone. Summer can feel a touch enclosed with full leaf cover, but at least it keeps things cool.

It's free, requires no booking, and won't leave you feeling like you've ticked a box. Just a good forest walk, the way they should be.
