Houghs Coppice

You'll find yourself walking into something genuinely quiet at Houghs Coppice - a proper working woodland just outside Church Stretton that doesn't feel like it's been prettified for visitors. The trees are thick here, mostly mature oak and birch, and the paths wind through without much fanfare or signage telling you what you're looking at.

It's the sort of place where you notice things. Bluebells in spring if you time it right, fungi on fallen logs, bird calls you can actually hear because there's no one else about. The coppice was managed traditionally for centuries, and you can still see the evidence of that in the way the woodland's structured - though it's wild enough now that it feels like proper forest rather than a manicured nature reserve.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination walk with a cafe at the end or a viewpoint to photograph - it's the real deal for people who just want to move through woodland without crowds. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so; there's no playground or water features. Spring or early autumn are your best bets, weather-wise.

If you're staying at Alderwood Glamping or Church Stretton Camp just down the road, this fills a morning nicely. Don't expect facilities - bring water, wear proper boots. The admission situation isn't documented anywhere obvious, so assume either free or a small honesty box system. It's worth the detour if you're serious about woodland walking rather than ticking boxes.
