Castle Hill

Standing at 1,430 feet, this bracken-covered hill rises dramatically from the Stretton Valley, offering some of the finest views in the Shropshire Hills. The climb from Church Stretton takes about 45 minutes up a well-marked but steep path through heather and gorse - proper walking boots essential.

From the summit cairn, the panorama stretches across to the Wrekin and beyond into Wales on clear days. It's a cracking spot for photographers, particularly at sunset when the light catches the rolling hills. The Iron Age hillfort remains are subtle but add historical interest for those who know what to look for.

Walkers will love this as part of a longer ridge walk, though families with younger children might find the ascent challenging. The path can get muddy after rain, and the exposed summit catches the wind something fierce.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you're taking your time. Early morning visits avoid the crowds and often reward you with better visibility.
