How Wood

Walking into How Wood feels like stepping into proper old England. Ancient woodland just east of Hitchin, dense enough that even on a busy day you can find quiet. The trees are tall and well-spaced, oak and beech mostly, with a good network of paths threading through. It's the kind of place where light filters through the canopy in columns rather than sheets.

This is a walker's wood, no question. Families with younger kids might manage an hour, but there's not much to stop for - no playground, no visitor centre, no café. What you get instead is space to breathe and clear your head. Locals use it for morning runs or a proper afternoon ramble. The ground can be muddy in winter, so good boots matter.

The nearest proper base is Jacks Hill Caravans, barely a mile away, or Baldock Park Homes just up the road at 2.5 miles. If you're stopping in the area for a few nights, How Wood makes an easy addition to a morning or late-afternoon slot. Don't expect it to be a day's destination on its own. What it is, though, is authentic - no management trails, no signage overdone, just a proper patch of woodland doing what it's done for centuries. Worth the detour if you're in Hertfordshire and need somewhere real to walk.
