Huntly Falconry Centre

The falconry centre sits just outside Huntly in Aberdeenshire, and it's one of those attractions that genuinely surprised me. I went expecting a bit of a tourist trap - you know the sort - but instead found myself watching Harris hawks and owls being flown with real skill and purpose.

You're there to watch birds of prey in action, mostly. The handlers know their stuff and aren't just going through the motions. They'll fly birds across the grounds, explain the hunting techniques, and let you get properly close if you're keen. Some places do this with a whiff of patronising commentary, but this lot treat visitors like they've got a genuine interest in the birds rather than just Instagram material.

Families with kids over about eight will get the most from it - younger ones might find the standing-around-waiting bits tedious. If you're into raptors or falconry history, you'll be there longer than most. Allow a couple of hours, though the actual flying demonstrations won't take all that time.

It works well as part of a broader Aberdeenshire castle circuit. Huntly Castle itself is worth an afternoon, and Huntly Castle Holiday Park sits just down the road if you're basing yourself here. The surrounding countryside is proper North East Scotland - rolling and austere rather than Instagram-pretty, which I rather prefer.
