Inchmartine Standing Stone

There's a weathered slab of stone standing in a Fife field that's been there longer than Christianity, longer than the Romans, longer than anyone can quite say for certain. The Inchmartine Standing Stone is the sort of place you'll pass if you know where to look - and most people don't.

It's genuinely ancient, Bronze Age most likely, though the locals have spent centuries adding their own theories to the mix. The stone itself is unremarkable at first glance - rough, grey, about seven feet tall - but there's something compelling about touching something that predates everything you can see around it. No interpretation boards, no gift shop, just the thing itself and your own head asking questions.

This works best for walkers and history types willing to do a bit of detective work to find it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming after five minutes - there's no play area, no café, no way to make a day of it here alone. But if you're based at Snugs at Logie Farm just a few miles away, or doing a slow loop through Perthshire, it's absolutely worth the detour.

The nearest real town is Perth, which gives you proper facilities. Go quietly, go early, bring your own sense of wonder. This is archaeology in its rawest form - a stone, time, and you figuring out what it all means.
