Inchtuthil Roman Fort

The Romans marched into Scotland and left behind the northernmost fortress of their entire empire. Inchtuthil, just outside Perth, is what remains of that audacious outpost - a sprawl of earthworks and low stone foundations that most visitors walk straight past without realising what they're looking at.

There's no visitor centre, no signs explaining what happened here around 85 AD, no café selling overpriced shortbread. Just you, the Tay valley, and the faint outline of what was once a proper military installation. History buffs will spend a good hour picking apart the ditch systems and trying to picture the legionaries drilling in formation. Kids tend to lose interest after twenty minutes unless you're good at making up stories about siege weapons.

It's free to access, and you can turn up any time - the site's open to the elements year-round. Wear decent boots though, especially in winter when it turns boggy. The walk from the nearest car park is straightforward but not marked particularly well.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Newmill Farm is genuinely excellent and closest at 5.3 miles - this works as a morning detour before heading to somewhere with more obvious appeal. Blairgowrie Holiday Park puts you in range too. Inchtuthil is best paired with other Roman sites in the region rather than visited alone. Honest assessment: it's more for the archaeology crowd than casual tourists, but if you've got a proper interest in the Romans in Britain, it's absolutely worth the trip.
