Saw mill

Industrial archaeology doesn't get much more basic than this weathered collection of stone foundations and rusted machinery parts scattered across a hillside near Perth. The remains of this old saw mill tell the story of Scotland's timber industry, though you'll need a fair bit of imagination to picture the place in its working heyday. What's left are the substantial stone bases where the waterwheel once turned, fragments of cast iron gearing, and the channel that once carried water from the burn above.

History buffs will appreciate the site more than casual visitors - there's precious little interpretation, so bring your own knowledge or do some homework beforehand. The walk up from the road takes about twenty minutes through some proper Scottish woodland, and the mill sits in a lovely spot overlooking the valley. Kids might enjoy the treasure hunt aspect of spotting different bits of old machinery, but they'll lose interest fairly quickly.

Access appears to be free, though the site feels somewhat forgotten - no facilities or formal paths. Worth combining with a visit to nearby Scone if you're staying at one of the local campsites like Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site. The saw mill works well as a short morning detour rather than a destination in its own right, particularly if you're already exploring this corner of Perthshire.
