The woodland paths at Inley's Copse wind through a proper slice of Hampshire forest, just a few miles outside Winchester. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour without trying - beech and oak overhead, enough shade to keep things cool even on warmer days, and the ground soft underfoot. Not dramatic or showy, but genuine quiet woodland that actually feels like a wood.

Walkers will find this worth a detour. The paths are straightforward enough that you won't need a map, though they do twist about enough to feel like proper exploration. Families with young kids can manage it without complaint - there's something about trees that keeps them occupied. Older children might find it a bit tame if you're only giving it thirty minutes, but make it a proper outing and they'll enjoy spotting wildlife or scrambling over fallen branches.

History enthusiasts won't find ruins or plaques here, but if you care about what Hampshire's ancient woodland actually looks like, this is the real thing. Allow a good hour for a comfortable wander, longer if you're prone to stopping and sitting on logs.

Based just outside Winchester, it slots neatly into a park holiday. Holden Farm Camping is your best shout for a base - exceptional site, proper cafe on-site - with Beechen Glamping a strong alternative if you want less roughing it. Neither is far enough away that getting to the copse feels like a chore. Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring enough foot traffic to spoil the quiet.
