Iron Age hillfort ramparts

The ramparts rise from the Sussex Downs like frozen waves, and you feel properly small standing at their base. These Iron Age defences - built around 500 BC - form a serious ring of earthworks that once protected an entire hillfort community. What you get now is the landscape itself: steep banks and ditches carved into the hillside, enough to make you understand why invaders would've thought twice about climbing them.

Walking the perimeter takes a good hour if you're not rushing, longer if you're the type to stop and read the view. On a clear day you can see right across the Weald from the top. The grass is short enough most of the time, though it gets properly muddy after rain - bring decent boots. It's free and open access, which is why you'll see locals just passing through rather than treating it as a destination in itself.

History types will get the most from this. Kids under ten might find it a bit abstract - there's no café, no visitor centre, just earthworks and views. Walkers heading out from Henfield will find it fits naturally into a longer route across the Downs. If you're camping at Foot of the Downs or Downsview Park, it's practically on your doorstep and worth an afternoon ramble. The real value is understanding how Iron Age people engineered their landscape, not in dramatic structures or theatrical history. Go if you're already hiking the area. Don't make a special trip unless you're genuinely into archaeology.
