Ironworks (site of)

The ironworks site near Haywards Heath is essentially a patch of Sussex woodland where something genuinely significant once happened - iron was being smelted here, properly smelted, centuries ago. There's not much to see now, mind you. No grand ruins or interpretive boards. Just the land itself, the contours where furnaces stood, scattered evidence if you know where to look. History types will find it compelling. Everyone else might wonder what the fuss is about after five minutes.

What draws people here is the Industrial archaeology angle. Sussex had a thriving iron industry once, and this site is part of that story - a place where raw ore became workable metal long before factories dominated the landscape. If you're already walking the area around Haywards Heath, it's worth a detour. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites like Sunset Tree Camping or Worth Forest Glamping, you could easily combine it with other local walks without making it your main event.

The practical reality: access depends on the land itself - whether it's open to the public or private property. There won't be visitor facilities. Allow maybe an hour if you're genuinely interested in understanding what happened here, less if you're just passing through. Spring or early summer is best, when the undergrowth isn't too thick and you can actually spot surface features. Go with someone who knows a bit about industrial history, or do some homework first. Otherwise you'll be staring at trees wondering what you're supposed to be looking at.
