Isle of Wedmore Golf Course

The Isle of Wedmore Golf Course sits just outside the village itself, a proper 18-hole course that takes advantage of the Somerset Levels' flat terrain in a way that actually works. Unlike some parkland courses that feel manufactured, this one has genuine character - tree-lined fairways, water hazards that demand respect, and greens that won't forgive a careless approach.

It's a solid day out if you're a golfer staying in the area. Handicap players will find enough challenge in the layout without it being punishing, and beginners won't feel entirely out of their depth. Allow a full four hours for a round, longer if your group's pace is leisurely. The course works year-round, though winter can mean waterlogged rough around the Levels.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Castle Farm Campsite is just down the road, while Wall Eden Farm offers a more rural retreat a few miles south - it's an easy morning or afternoon excursion. Worth ringing ahead to check membership requirements; visitor green fees are typically reasonable for the South West.

Non-golfers needn't bother. There's no clubhouse café to speak of, and spectating gets tedious fast. But for families where at least one person plays, it breaks up a wet Somerset week nicely. The village of Wedmore itself has the usual amenities if you want lunch after.
