Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve

Westhay Moor is a working wetland reserve that feels less like a manicured nature trail and more like stepping into actual Somerset landscape. You're looking at reed beds, open water, and the kind of bird life that justifies people standing still for hours with binoculars pressed to their faces.

The reserve sits just outside Wedmore and works best if you're genuinely interested in birds and wildlife. Casual walkers sometimes find it a bit underwhelming - it's flat, open, and doesn't offer the dramatic views you might expect. But for twitchers, photographers, and anyone who wants to understand what the Somerset Levels actually are, it's the real deal. Winter brings overwintering wildfowl; spring gets interesting with breeding birds.

You can walk the perimeter without paying, though donations help. Allow two to three hours if you're serious, an hour if you're just having a poke around. Go early morning for the best chance of seeing something worth photographing. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

It slots neatly into a base at one of the nearby parks - Castle Farm Campsite is closest at under three miles, while Wells Touring Park offers more facilities if you want creature comforts. The Levels deserve a proper explore, and Westhay Moor is where you understand why they're worth protecting.
