Iveletside Wood

The woodland here sits quietly off the beaten track between Richmond and the higher moorland - proper forest floor stuff with enough trees to lose yourself in for an afternoon without feeling you've trekked miles. Iveletside Wood is straightforward: paths through mixed deciduous and conifer plantings, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birds rather than other visitors. There's something satisfying about it being low-key. No visitor centre, no postcard stall, just woodland as it is.

Walkers and families with younger kids will get the most mileage out of it. The paths are manageable without needing serious kit, and children old enough to manage a mile or two won't find it tedious - there's enough variation in the trees and occasional glimpses of the valley below to keep them engaged. On a damp autumn day when the light comes through at an angle, it's genuinely atmospheric. Spring's decent too if you're after bluebells, though nothing spectacularly showstopping.

If you're based at Usha Gap Farm just down the road - barely eight-tenths of a mile away - you could easily make this a morning outing without committing the whole day. It works well as a breather between more serious activities. Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club is five and a half miles off, so less convenient but still within a reasonable drive if you're staying there. Free to access, as far as we can tell, and no set opening hours to worry about. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on pace and how often you stop to listen to the wood settle.
