Johnson's Wood

Walking into Johnson's Wood feels like stepping back a few decades. It's proper woodland - the kind with actual trees rather than a manicured nature reserve - just outside Cranbrook, and it's the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss entirely.

The wood itself is nothing fancy. You get woodland paths, greenery, and the genuine peace that comes from being surrounded by trees without any visitor centre or cafe in sight. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours wandering around depending on how lost you want to get. The footpaths are reasonably well-maintained, though it's muddy after rain - proper woodland conditions, not a groomed country estate.

This works best for people who actually like walking rather than looking at things. If your idea of a forest visit involves a tea room and interpretive signage, you'll find it a bit bare. But if you're the type who enjoys just moving through trees, listening to birds, and not encountering many other people, it's genuinely good. Families with older kids will get on fine; younger ones might lose interest after half an hour.

If you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Glassenbury or Tanner Farm are closest - it's an easy morning walk that doesn't require driving anywhere. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's exactly the sort of straightforward local woodland that makes a proper break feel less managed and more like actually getting away.
