Thick canopy overhead filters the light into green-gold shafts, while the forest floor crunches satisfyingly underfoot with decades of fallen leaves.

Families with older kids will love the sense of adventure, though pushchairs are a non-starter on these rough tracks. Dog walkers have struck gold here - acres of off-lead freedom without the crowds you'll find at better-known forest spots. The paths aren't waymarked, so bring a decent map if you're planning anything ambitious.

What makes this place special is the silence. No car parks, no visitor centres, just proper forest doing its own thing. You might spot deer if you're quiet enough, and the bird life is excellent.

Perfect for a morning's exploration when you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - New Forest Glamping and the Centenary Caravan site are practically on the doorstep. Give yourself a couple of hours minimum to make it worthwhile, though you could easily lose a whole afternoon here if the walking bug bites.
