The walk up Keir Hills takes you through proper Dumfries and Galloway countryside, a landscape that shifts from farmland to moorland as you climb. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the higher summits further north - but that's rather the point. From Thornhill, it's accessible enough for a family afternoon without needing to commit to a full day of fell-walking.

Once you're up there, the views flatten out across the Southern Uplands. On a clear day you catch sight of distant hills rolling toward the border, which is worth the modest effort. The walking itself is straightforward - no scrambling, no proper technical bits. Locals use it regularly, which tells you something about how well-established the paths are.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Penpont Holiday Park or Red Squirrel Campsite, both within a few miles of Thornhill. You could spend a couple of hours up there without feeling rushed, maybe pack a flask, take in the quietness. It's not a showstopper attraction - you're not coming to Dumfries and Galloway specifically for Keir Hills - but it slots perfectly into a broader walk around the area. Families with reasonably fit children will manage it fine. The real appeal is how few other people you'll encounter, and how it feels genuinely remote despite being so close to town.
