Kilmaveonaig, St Adamnan’s

The ruined kirk sits on a quiet hillside above Pitlochry, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. St Adamnan's dates back to the medieval period, though what stands now is mostly 17th-century work - thick stone walls and a few window openings that frame views down the valley. The churchyard itself is the real draw: moss-covered gravestones lean at angles, and there's something properly moving about the quietness up here, especially on a grey afternoon.

It's a short walk from the road, maybe ten minutes, so families won't struggle with it. History buffs will appreciate the carved stones and the sheer age of the site - St Adamnan was an Iona abbot, which tells you something about the spiritual importance of this spot. The views towards the Tay valley make it well worth the climb, and you could easily combine it with a longer walk through the surrounding hills.

Free to visit, obviously. Allow maybe 30 minutes if you're just stopping by, longer if you're doing a proper ramble. Spring and early summer are best - the churchyard's less waterlogged and the light's better for photography.

If you're based at Blair Castle Caravan Park, this is practically on your doorstep. Even River Tilt Park, despite its poor ratings, puts you within easy reach. It's the sort of place that fills an hour between a morning hike and afternoon lunch in Pitlochry itself.
